Fraud Alert: That Job Offer Text May Be a Scam

Searching for a job—or simply open to earning extra income? Scammers know that many people are looking for flexible work and quick ways to make money, and they’re taking advantage through fake job offers sent by text message.

These scams often promise high pay, flexible schedules, or remote work with little experience required. While they may seem legitimate at first, the goal is usually to steal your money, personal information, or both.

According to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), scammers are increasingly sending unexpected text messages claiming to offer jobs, often pretending to represent well-known companies or recruiters.

Common Red Flags to Watch For:

  • Unexpected Text Messages About Jobs
Legitimate employers typically don’t offer jobs through random texts—especially if you never applied.
  • Too Good to Be True Pay
High pay for little work or no experience is a major warning sign.
  • Requests for Money or Purchases
Scammers may ask you to pay for equipment, training, or background checks—or ask you to deposit checks and send money back.
  • Pressure to Act Quickly
Messages that push you to respond immediately are designed to lower your guard.
  • Requests for Sensitive Information
Be cautious if someone asks for your Social Security number, banking information, or copies of personal documents too early in the process.

How to Protect Yourself

  • Research the company independently
  • Verify job postings on the company’s official website
  • Never pay money to get a job
  • Be cautious of unsolicited job texts
  • Avoid sharing sensitive information until you confirm the employer is legitimate

What To Do If You Receive a Suspicious Job Offer

Do not click links, send money, or share personal information. Block the sender and report suspicious text messages as spam.

If you believe you shared financial information or were targeted by a scam, contact Tampa Bay Federal right away so we can help protect your accounts.

Stay Alert

Job opportunities should never cost you money or pressure you into acting quickly. If an offer feels rushed, unrealistic, or too good to be true, pause and verify before responding.
